Grade 1 Poem

Autumn’s Here, Winter’s Coming

Autumn is the time of year when changes are all around,

Leaves change colours, fall from trees and land on the ground.

We like to rake them into piles and jump in them for fun,

Autumn’s cooler and shorter days tell us summer time is done.

Farmers harvest the last of their crops, winter is coming soon,

If you listen carefully, you can hear the final call of the loon.

Many animals are finding dens to hibernate through the cold,

Others have begun to migrate south, in flocks of young and old.

Autumn is such a beautiful season with the colours that it brings,

I’ll have to fill my birdfeeder up for those creatures with wings.

Fall is here, but winter is coming, the cold winds tell us so,

It’s time to dress ourselves up warm from our heads to our toes.

Grade 2 Poem

Animals

The many types of animals are so wild and so cool,

Reptiles and other animals are what we'll learn about at school.

Mammals such as beavers, have hair coming out of their skin,

Reptiles like snakes and alligators have scales to begin.

Some mammals and most reptiles sleep for winter, or hibernate,

Most birds and some mammals move around or migrate.

Animals can be sorted by mammals, retiles, or fish,

There can also be birds, insects, or crustaceans if you wish.

Some lay eggs or have live births or skeletons on the outside,

Others have feathers or fur covering them or skeletons on the inside.

Some animals are extinct, endangered are many others, 

It's time that we remember they're like our sisters and our brothers.

Animals are so amazing to research and learn about,

There's a lot to do to keep them safe,

I'll remember without a doubt.

All About Me


I am so special because I am me,
I have two eyes so I can see.
I have a nose so I can smell,
I have ears so I can hear as well.
I have a mouth to eat and taste, 
I have two hands so I can paste.
I have two feet so I can walk,
I have a mouth so I can talk.
I can feel with my skin,
It hurts me when I hit my shin.
I like myself because I am me,
I am so special, you can see.

Grade 2 Poem

Me, Myself and I

Me, myself, and I, how I wish that I could fly,

I have two arms, I move up and down, how I try and try.

I think about my life and how I came to be,

I have mom and dad, it’s true, I have a family.

There are a lot of things I like and some that I do not,

I’m thankful for my family and everything that I’ve got.

I have made many friends, that will last for a long, long time,

I’ll grow up, make good choices, and never commit a crime.

Making good choices means thinking with my brain,

It means using common sense, not forgetting in the rain.

I’m glad that I am who I am, as part of my family tree,

I’ll take every chance I’m given to be the best that I can be.

This month we will be loving all things winter by investigating and researching snow and ice.

January Poem-Snow and Ice

                 Snow and Ice

December has gone and January is here,
The days are cold now,
Two thousand and seventeen is the year.

The north winds blow the cold air in,
Three months of winter left and spring will begin.

Snow and ice are here so we can slide skate and ski,
If we didn't have winter,
Snow and ice would never be.

December Poem: Sensing The Seasons

Sensing The Season

Feel the snowflakes on your face,

Cold as ice they take their place.

Smell the gingerbread in the air,

Make a house if you dare.

Taste the sweets all around,

Chocolate and candy canes can be found.

Hear the many sounds of the season,

Singing, bells and music all for a reason.

See the lights that shine in the night,

Colours of the season are red, green and white.

Animal Hibernation

We are creating dioramas of hibernating animals in November. Please send in a shoebox so your child can start their research project and create their report.  Talk with your child about which animals hibernate and what each animal's habitat looks like.

How Animals Get Ready For Winter

Brown squirrel, brown squirrel, what do you do?

I gather nuts for winter. Is that what you do?

Black bear, black bear, what do you do?

I find a den to sleep all winter. Is that what you do?

Canada goose, Canada goose, what do you do?

I fly south for the winter. Is that what you do?

Caterpillar, caterpillar, what do you do?

I make a warm cocoon for winter. Is that what you do?

Beaver, beaver, what do you do?

I make a den of stick and mud. Is that what you do?

Grade Two Poem for November

Learning Skills

Each student has identified what learning skills they would like to improve.  We relate these skills to different animals.  Ask your child what their animal is and what skill they are working on. 

Reading Focus

We are learning strategies to help us sound out words, Stretchy Snake, Lips the Fish and Chunky Monkey are on the schedule for this month.  Reading Groups have begun and students are keen on reading and improving levels!
